Environmental Responsibility

Environmental Responsibility

Managing Director: Mike Craven
“At James Johnson, sustainability is at the heart of everything we do. From responsible sourcing to efficient production, we are committed to protecting the environment. After all, you can’t get more sustainable than timber.”

1. FSC Certified

James Johnson is proud to be FSC® certified, ensuring all our timber comes from responsibly managed forests. This certification reflects our commitment to ethical sourcing and sustainable forestry. Quality and responsibility go hand in hand in everything we create.

2. Waste Management

We minimise waste and maximise efficiency. All timber off-cuts are environmentally burnt in our wood burner, and the energy generated is fed back into the factory. Nothing goes to waste, and our processes benefit both the environment and production.

3. Sustainability

Sustainability is at the heart of James Johnson. We actively restore what we utilise, including tree planting initiatives, to ensure a positive environmental impact. Every project contributes to a greener future.

4. Innovative Process

Innovation drives efficiency and reduces CO₂ output. Our offsite design and production streamline workflows, improve organisation, and minimise the number of deliveries to site. Smarter processes mean a smaller carbon footprint for every project.

Environmental Responsibility

Our industry presents a number of potential risks, and we take a proactive approach to managing them. Alongside full compliance with mandatory training, appropriate PPE, machinery safeguards, and rigorous inspection processes, we continually review and implement best practices to further improve safety across our operations.
A key part of this approach is our focus on design-led risk reduction. By developing joinery solutions that minimise on-site construction wherever possible, much of our work can be completed within our controlled factory environment, reducing risk and allowing work to be carried out more safely and efficiently.

At James Johnson, we also recognise that some of the most important health considerations are not always visible. Mental wellbeing is an essential part of a safe and supportive workplace. We have previously partnered with Minds Matter to help strengthen awareness around mental health, and we are grateful to Christian Darlea, who has taken on the role of Mental Health Champion, supporting colleagues and promoting an open and supportive culture across the company.
