James Johnson & Co Ltd is proud to have delivered the joinery fit-out for four key performance spaces at the Schwarzman Centre, combining technical precision, exceptional craftsmanship, and architectural ambition.
World-Class Concert Hall
The 500-seat concert hall was designed to rival Europe’s finest, with acoustic engineering by Arup and the versatility to host everything from classical chamber orchestras to amplified contemporary music. The hall features a £8million+ joinery package, including over 8,000 individually veneered ceiling slats set to precise acoustic tolerances. The curved, raked balustrade aligns perfectly with the stepped seating, curving in plan and section—a feat requiring sub-millimetre precision, extensive prototyping, and close collaboration with the wider design and acoustic teams. Every joinery element was integral to the hall’s acoustic performance, as well as its striking visual impact.
Rehearsal Hall
The rehearsal hall demanded a practical yet high-quality fit-out to support the intensive use of students and performers. James Johnson delivered a robust, acoustically responsive environment, with precision joinery for wall panels, flooring, and storage units designed to enhance both performance and functionality.
Blackbox Theatre
The flexible blackbox space required bespoke joinery solutions to allow for multiple configurations. James Johnson provided movable platforms, seating, and storage units, engineered to exacting standards, ensuring the space could adapt to a wide range of theatrical performances and events.
250-Seat Lecture Theatre
The lecture theatre combines audience comfort with technical performance, featuring custom balustrades, seating surround wall panelling, and cabinetry that integrate seamlessly into the auditorium’s design. Every element was manufactured and installed to maintain the visual and functional quality expected across the Schwarzman Centre.
Across all four spaces, James Johnson’s approach combined skilled craftsmanship, innovative design, and meticulous installation, ensuring each venue met both aesthetic and functional requirements. This project demonstrates the company’s ability to deliver world-class joinery solutions in some of the most technically demanding performance and academic environments in the UK.
